HISTORY OF BINGO

  • Date: February 23, 2016

From parlors in Italy to pubs in France to carnivals in Pennsylvania to the casino floor at Spirit Mountain—bingo has been a gaming staple for more than 500 years. Here’s how it all began:

The Early Years: An Italian Tradition
Bingo owes its start to Il Giuoco del Lotto d'Italia, a sixteenth century Italian game. The game was played weekly and was sponsored by the Italian government, which used the funds raised to support public projects. To this day, the government sponsors weekly Il Giuoco del Lotto d'Italia games that contribute to the budget.

Expansion: From French Parlors to Pubs
By the mid-1800s, the French were playing a streamlined version of Il Giuoco del Lotto d'Italia. Under the new name Le Lotto, gamers combined cards with a square-covered board. Although Le Lotto was initially a game reserved for the upper class, it soon became popular across all communities.

The Trans-Atlantic Journey: Bingo in the United States
Fast-forward four hundred years to a carnival in western Pennsylvania. An entrepreneur named Hugh J. Ward created an established rule book for Le Lotto. Dried beans were the token of choice, earning the updated version of Le Lotto the moniker ‘Beano.’

In 1929, toymaker Edwin Lowe stumbled on a game of Beano at a carnival and was amazed by the crowd it attracted. He brought the game back to New York with him, and legend has it that a friend became so excited at her win that she mistakenly shouted “BINGO!”
