HONORING PRINCE

May 3, 2016

Last week, the world lost one of its brightest rockstars. Prince will forever be a pioneer in the entertainment industry: From his original songwriting to his lavish performances, he redefined modern music by refusing to conform to genre or precedent.

Prince was born in Minneapolis, where his youth was spent like millions of other Americans: Football, basketball, and baseball filled his days after school. It wasn’t until he was seventeen that he got his big break and fame was soon to follow. Prince was one of the only artists to write, compose, sing, and play every instrument on his recordings, making his albums a bonafide one man show.

With four Billboard-topping albums, 20 gold and platinum LPs, and numerous Grammy, Golden Globe, and Academy awards, Prince’s universal popularity is a testament to his success. As we reflect on the life of Prince, the team at Spirit Mountain Casino pulled together our top 5 albums. These are the records that we keep playing over and over, even decades after their release:

Purple Rain
“Best Soundtrack,” “Best Rock n’ Roll Album,” “Greatest Album of all Time” - this 1984 hit always has a spot amongst the ‘best of’ lists in the music industry. Packed with hits that include  "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy," it’s one of those records that never goes out of style.

1999
This 1982 breakthrough album solidified Prince as a musician to watch. It’s widely regarded as one of the most influential records and is a Grammy Hall of Fame inductee. We love the funky beat and synthesized arrangements.

Parade
Featuring French monologues, sweeping orchestral suites, and a furious drum section, this 1986 release highlighted the innovative capabilities of Prince. It also gained him international renown thanks to songs like “Kiss” and “Mountains.

Dirty Mind
With its minimalistic recording style and uniquely sparse sound, this 1980 release was proof that Prince could make magic with music in any setting. Recorded almost entirely on his own (and in a night), Dirty Mind has a pared-down sound that is rare of Prince albums.

Around the World in a Day
This 1985 release earned Platinum status thanks to its uniquely psychedelic sound. With hits that include “Raspberry Beret" and "Pop Life," this album is a staple for its special and experimental approach.

We can’t wait to hear hits from these top albums on Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4 when Purple Reign comes to Spirit Mountain. The nation’s top Prince tribute artist will recreate the talent that has connected lifelong fans all around the world. Join us for an evening of entertainment, exceptional music, and memories of our country’s greatest rock star.
