“The Tears of a Clown”
Robinson teamed up with Stevie Wonder and Hank Cosby to write this 1970 hit single. Wonder came to Robinson with the instrumentals, and he added the lyrics to this future Grammy Hall of Fame inductee. With millions of sales and near-instant #1 status on Billboard Hot 100 and R&B Singles, “Tears of a Clown” is still a beloved favorite.
“Tracks of My Tears”
Maybe it’s the opening guitar riff, maybe it’s the honeyed melody—there’s something about this chart topper that never gets old. Written in collaboration with Miracles members Pete Moore and Marv Tarplin, Robinson’s 1965 hit was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, landed #50 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and was added to the National Recording Registry. Imitation is also the sincerest form of flattery: “Tracks of My Tears” has been covered by Johnny Rivers, Linda Ronstadt, and many others.
The ultimate crowd-pleaser, “Cruisin’” is one of those songs that gets everyone in the room singing along. Robinson built the lyrics around Marv Tarplin’s guitar licks, and the 1979 single was one of his most successful solo tracks. “Cruisin’” topped charts all over the world, from the United States to New Zealand.
